I think it is important to avoid losing faith as the team loses players. The latest defections come from the Defensive Line. One may ask were these players lost to injury, lost to the dreaded honor code, or suspended from breaking team rules? No to all three.
These two players have both decided to serve missions. They are Ian Dulan and Russell Tialevea. Both of them have been in the program for a long time and were slated to start alongside Jan Jorgensen, there presence will be missed. Therefore we have two spots on the line.
So here is a brief look at who will now have the opportunity to start.

Bernard Afutiti (ineligible)
Matt Putnam
Brett Denney
Rick Wolfley

I would think that Brett Denney and Rick Wolfley will start and the other will back up.
Hope and Pray that incoming freshman will step up.

Fui drafted by Bengals; Nixon, others sign free agent contracts
Jeff CallDeseretNews.com blogger April 26, 2009 at 7:05 p.m.
Fui Vakapuna was taken in the seventh round by the Cincinnati Bengals. He'll be reunited with a former BYU teammate, tight end Daniel Coats.
David Nixon's agent, Carter Chow, just informed me that Nixon has signed a free agent contract with the Oakland Raiders. Also, Dallas Reynolds has signed a free agent deal with the Philadelphia Eagles and Travis Bright with the Dallas Cowboys.

Two questions for 2009 BYU Football.

Two factors led to the season ending losses against Utah and Arizona. Factor 1- in both cases we could not keep the ball away from the other teams because of turnovers caused by too much reliance on the passing game. The second factor was a lack of personal accountability in preparing to play each opponent.

The questions surrounding the 2009 season then center around those two factors.
Question 1
Will the running game balance out the offense again?
The return of Manese Tonga, who will be back as the lead fullback for a completely healthy Harvey Unga, will return Harvey to his 2007 form. Harvey will not have to carry the whole rushing load. Braden Brown, the third Tight End, will also be the backup fullback. Braden and Manese are very good pass catchers as well.

J.J. Diluigi, Bryan Kariya and Mike Hague will be the backups at running back. J.J. has his confidence back and will become the lightning to Harvey's thunder. Kariya will be more of a Fui short yardage guy. Mike is the fastest of the bunch, and when he gets his legs back he will show his veratility as a pass catching back.
Stephen Covey, and his speed, will play the Nate Mikel role as a speedy receiver over the middle which acts as a running play. I am not factoring in the two recruits who join the runners in August.

What about the film study problem?
Cameron Jensen a.k.a. the General along with Bryan Kehl have voluntered to show the troops how to use the DVD's that are given to them to prepare. They showed up before spring ball to teach and instruct. Problem solved.

An E-mail response from Duff Tittle about this blog

We have blogging policies for members of the media who wish to blog during our events. At this point our office doesn't have a fan blogging policy.

The only policies that I'm aware of for personal blogs are not using the terms Brigham Young University, Brigham Young or BYU in the TITLE or URL or using the trademark BYU logos. The University is pretty careful when it comes to it's name and official marks.

I think the way you have described your blog, I would guess you are fine.

Good luck,

Duff

Running Backs

www.totalbluesports.com , has an update on the running back situation. They paint a positive picture.
It sounds like J.J. and Kariya will help to spell a healthy Unga. Braden Brown will help at fullback.

Tackle that guy!!!

http://deseretnews.com/blogs/monthly/1,5553,19,00.html?bD=20090205&sc=dmn
Dick Harmon mentions in this blog that many of the problems that the defense had last year were due to lack of film study. He says that Cameron Jensen an Bryan Kehl have returned to teach the team how to do it.
Instead of throwing a whole new defense out onto the field, it makes sense to fix what we already have. Corners excluded.
